swinging bebop & hard bop!
On 10 November, Seba Colson invites a number of friends he made in Brussels, Paris and New York. All six share a passion for jazz, more specifically the subgenres bebop and hard bop. Because this music is hardly programmed in Belgium any more, Seba is now taking the initiative himself. The style they play is not a museum piece; it is virtuoso music that moves people and makes them want to dance, especially when it is performed by musicians who devote their lives to learning to speak this language.
Seba is in the middle of that learning process and therefore visits Paris on a monthly basis. In that city he discovered that this music is still very much alive and that there are plenty of musicians who have made the style their own. There is also a huge, fiercely enthusiastic audience for it. This motivates many musicians to go and live there, such as trombonist Joan Codina Cuso and drummer Malte Arndal. Double bassist Slim Chikhaoui, born and raised in Paris, is also among the absolute top; he is one of the toughest bassists Seba has ever heard. This French trio is travelling to Rijkevorsel especially for this concert.
In 2025 Seba travelled to New York, the birthplace of bop, for the same reason. There he truly saw how the music keeps growing and enjoys enormous appreciation. He became friends with Deschanel Gordon, a pianist from London who moved to New York for exactly the same reasons and swings like no other!
On saxophone, Colson invites a closer partner. He got to know this musician in Brussels and was immediately deeply impressed. After all, there are no tenor saxophonists in Belgium who master the style so thoroughly. To proudly represent the Belgian scene, Tom Callens (tenor saxophone) completes the sextet!
A brand-new formation that has never played together before, but one thing is certain... it is going to swing seriously!
